A very warm welcome to the Ambika Yoga website! As a Yoga Teacher Alexa Kho has been developing her practice in the Art of Yoga for over seven years.  Venturing to Vrindavan, India for her first teacher training course in February 2008, Alexa was named “Ambika” by her teachers during the 200 Hour Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training that she successfully completed.

In December 2009 she was awarded Highly Commended at the NHS Confederation for ‘Making the Confed a Better Place to Work’ with her  Corporate Yoga Classes. During this time Alexa was dedicated in developing her Yoga teaching by participating in extensive Anusara Yoga classes, workshops, conferences and completing a 100 Hour Anusara Immersion in 2010. Travelling across the globe connecting with many different teachers Alexa has added to her training hours from New York in 2009, to Hong Kong, Singapore & Bali in 2010, and 2011.

Over the past three years she has been specialising in Therapeutic Yoga in London and built up her private practice while still teaching her dedicated public students with her popular classes, workshops and retreats. She has also extended her Corporate Yoga teaching to IKEA having led special IKEA @ Home sessions in November 2012. Alexa will be furthering her therapeutic training in the Summer of 2013 in London, with two leading lights Elena Voyce & Lisa Sanfilippo; which she is very excited about! Ambika [अम्बिका]

is translated in Sanskrit as a “Jain Yakshi Goddess”. She is the Yakshi (dedicated attendant deity), or the Sasana Devi (protector goddess) of Tirthankara Neminatha. Ambika was the Mother of Dhritarashtra whom was the King of Hastinapur, and the Uncle to the Pandava’s in the epic Indian story of the Bhagavad Gita. The principle worship of “Ambika” or “Mother” was first applied by the Jainas at the end of the 6th Century CE defined by the term “Yaksi Ambika”.

Yoga [योग]

Originated in India and written about in many famous Indian texts including the Bhagavad Gita, translated as “The Song of the Lord”, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Tattvartha Sutra. Direct translation of Yoga in Sanskrit comes from root or “yuj” which means “to control” or “unify” .  In modern western society it is referred to as the practice of “Hatha Yoga” by way of postures (asanas) and meditation. “Ha” meaning sun, or to warm up, and “tha” meaning moon, or to cool down.
